Do you wake up with jaw pain, a headache or teeth that feel sore? You may be grinding or clenching your teeth, often while you sleep. Dentists call this bruxism. Over time it can wear down enamel, crack fillings and crowns, and strain the jaw joint (the TMJ), causing clicking, pain or difficulty opening the mouth – known as TMD. At First Dental Center we diagnose and treat teeth grinding and jaw problems at our branches in Sheikh Zayed (serving 6th of October), New Giza, Zamalek and Maadi.

Signs you may be grinding your teeth

  • Morning headaches or an aching jaw

  • Flattened, chipped or sensitive teeth

  • Clicking, popping or locking of the jaw

  • Tight, tired face muscles

  • A partner who hears grinding at night

  • Cracked fillings, crowns or veneers

What causes bruxism and TMJ problems?

There is often more than one cause. Common factors include stress and anxiety, sleep problems, an uneven bite or missing and crooked teeth, some medications, and caffeine or alcohol late in the day. Finding the cause matters, because it decides the right treatment.

How we diagnose it

Your dentist examines your teeth for wear, checks your bite and feels the jaw joint and chewing muscles. When the joint needs a closer look, we use in-house 3D dental X-ray (CBCT) imaging so we can see the joint and surrounding bone in detail.

Treatment options at First Dental Center

  • Custom night guard (occlusal splint): a thin, made-to-measure guard worn at night that protects your teeth and helps the jaw muscles relax.

  • Bite correction: when crooked teeth or an uneven bite contribute, our orthodontists can correct it with braces or clear aligners.

  • Repairing worn teeth: once grinding is under control, worn or broken teeth can be rebuilt with ceramic crowns or veneers.

  • Botox for clenching: for selected patients with strong, persistent clenching, our trained doctors can inject Botox into the chewing muscles to reduce their force. The effect is temporary and usually needs repeating.

  • Habit and lifestyle advice: simple steps for stress, sleep and daytime clenching, and referral to other specialists when needed.

Frequently asked questions

Is teeth grinding harmful?

Occasional grinding is common, but regular grinding can wear teeth down, break dental work and cause jaw pain. It is worth having it checked early.

Will a night guard stop me grinding?

A night guard protects your teeth and reduces strain on the jaw, but it does not remove the cause. That is why we look at your bite, habits and sleep as well.

Is Botox for teeth grinding safe?

In suitable patients, treated by a trained doctor, it is a well-established option. We will only recommend it after an examination, and we will explain the benefits, limits and possible side effects first.
